Vasectomy

Vasectomy is performed as a contraceptive intervention. Approximately 1 cm of each spermatic cord is removed in order to interrupt the passage of sperm cells. Ejaculation and semen volume is not interfered by the procedure.

Before surgery

You should have received information about the procedure from your general practitioner (GP) and signed the "Request for vasectomy" that is provided to you by your GP.

Bring the signed request for the preliminary examination.

Possibly plan the transport home after surgery (pick-up by relatives, taxi or other).

Surgery

The surgery is performed under local anesthesia. We also recommend combining the local anesthesia with a light sedation in the form of an injection in the arm, as it minimizes discomfort.

A small piece of the spermatic cord is removed through a tiny incision on each side of the scrotum. At the end 1 or 2 stitches are added to the skin. The stitches dissolve and disappear after 7-10 days.

After surgery

Local anesthetic disappear after 4-5 hours. If there is pain or discomfort after the local anesthesia disappears over the counter pain killers can be used.

If you have hard physical work, we recommend that you stay at home after surgery for 1 or 2 days.

As a microscopic examination must determine that no living sperm cells are present left 12 weeks after vasectomy, you must deliver a semen sample to the laboratory. We supply the necessary container and papers. Until the result from the medical laboratory is available, other contraceptive measures must be used.

Complications

After vasectomy there may be bruises on the skin of the scrotum. They are harmless and disappear within a couple of weeks.

In rare cases a blood clot and inflammation can occur under and around the wound. If there is reddish discoloration, swelling, pain and possibly fever, you should contact the clinic during business hours. After business hours you may contact the emergency room or the hospital to be examined.
