Umbilical hernia

navlebrok1
navlebrok2

A weak spot in the abdominal wall at the umbilicus causes an umbilical hernia. Through this spot fatty tissue or bowel protrude and form a bulge.

Before surgery

When treated with blood thinning medication (eg. Aspirin or Marevan) this MUST be mentioned on first contact with the clinic.

Possibly purchase painkillers and laxative to use after surgery (see below).

Remove hair around the umbilicus.

Surgery

The procedure is performed under local anesthetic. We recommend a supplement of relaxing and sedative injections in the arm prior to surgery.

The skin over the hernia is opened. At a minor weakness in the abdominal wall, the tissue is stitched together. At greater weaknesses a nylon-net is used as reinforcement.

After Surgery

Local anesthetic lasts for 2-6 hours. Unless agreed otherwise, take regular painkillers such as Panodil and Ipren in combination.

Due to the tendency of constipation after surgery, it is recommended to take Magnesia tablets, 2 pieces in the evening the first couple of days.

You can shower the day after the procedure. The patch is removed after 1 day (unless otherwise agreed). It is allowed to go to work the day after surgery. You should avoid heavy lifting and gymnastics of abdominal muscles for the first 3-4 weeks. Many prefer to stay at home for 3-5 days.

Possible complications

Under the skin, minor bruising can be seen and disappear after days or weeks.

Larger clots or infections in the wound are rare. A new hernia in the same location is extremely rare.

Seek medical attention

If major bleeding or signs of infection occur you have to seek medical attention as soon as possible.
